Schools

This is the season when schools are filling the last of their positions before the start of the new academic year.  Again, this is not an exhaustive list.

Portland Public Schools

Beaverton Public Schools

North Clackamas School District ... This is all of the schools in north Clackamas County.  Most are accessable by public transportation.

Hillsboro School District ... This one confused me because the heading on the site appears to have an error but the jobs all say Hillsboro.

Gresham-Barlow School District

David Douglas School District

Centennial School District

Tigard-Tualatin School District

Media opportunities

Certainly not an exhaustive list but a few local opportunities.

KGW / Belo ... two positions posted

KOIN Local 6 ... seven positions posted

KATU / Fisher Broadcasting ... five positions posted

KPTV / Meredith Corporation ... two positions posted

Oregon Public Broadcasting ... two positions posted

Now, this one might seem like I have posted the wrong link, however, I called The Portland Tribune (and community newspapers) and their Administrative Assistant said they post both community help wanted as well as their own openings here.  Pamplin Media Group owns 17 community newspapers so the list of jobs looks extensive.

Virtual Job Fair

What are friends for if not to provide you with interesting links?  PF sent me the link for a virtual job fair where employers are targetting 10,000 veterans or veterans family members.

I just checked on section of the site and they show in excess of 23,000 jobs available.  Now, I have NOT researched this site down to the nitty gritty.  I am hoping the jobs shared are not like some of the stick & mortar job fairs we have been to: schools, reserve units trying to recruit, and insurance jobs which are commission only.  Plus the call centers.

So, anyone game to go exploring?  This is the place.  We can discuss your adventure in job club.

Digital literacy

One of the job developers I share information with through a LinkedIn group posted this link.  If you feel like a beginner when it comes to using technology, perhaps this site will be helpful.

Even though we are not offering a lot of classes in the classroom currently, the classroom is OPEN and we often have a volunteer who will assist.  Please feel free to come explore different links, sites and applications.

Here is a funny one ... Mouse Exercises.  This one has audio with it.  I think it was designed for "mature" users because part of the title to the site has the word Senior in it.

Knock Em' Dead ... Resume helps

Knock Em' Dead author Martin Yates has posted an interesting blog post about keywords and resume content.  I have used his books as reference sources for years and was excited to see this article.

The blog post is here.

Offer feedback, that is the way we each grow.

Job Club links

First ... drum roll ... THANK YOU to the veterans who were in Women Veterans Job Club today.

For Job Club today, we explored two links.  The first link is for candidates to discover what their employment personality might be and how to work with your preferrences rather than against them.  This link will take you to that site.  If you want to explore the Holland codes, you can go here to read about the 6 codes you will find in your inventory.  These are not the answers to your career search, just additional clues.

The second link will take you to a site which was specifically designed to assist veterans with transition.  When you get to this site, navigate to the lower edge of the page and click on the word "menu".  The menu offers you several options, from assessments, skills builders and resume writer to actual job search sites.

Good luck and Enjoy!

Thanks!

For those of you who were able to come to the vet picnic today: THANKS!

Side note: KATU Add 1 Job has been updated again.  If you see an employer you are interested in ... we can help you make a connection.

Oregon Food Bank: Take Charge of your Health

Oregon Food Bank is another local non-profit who will utilize volunteer help.  To contact them about volunteer opportunities, go here.

The other current opportunity with OFP, is a series of nutrition classes.  You can look here for those opportunities.  This summer, the focus is affordable, nutritious meals.  At the end of each session, you are provided with a bag of groceries.  Becomes a WIN - WIN: learn to cook and supplement your food budget with fresh foods.

Again, no pressure.  Just an opportunity to learn and practice self sufficiency.

Volunteer Opportunity: Sisters of the Road

As I scout around, looking for women who have interest in the WHVRP program, I occassionally find other opportunities.  The following paragraph is from a gal I met in the community.  She is high energy and easy to talk with.  If you have an interest, I would encourage you to pick up a copy of the volunteer application (my desk area) and apply.

Her text to me:
Thanks for your interest in Sisters! Due to the Cafe closure over much of August, our next orientation will be held Monday, September 10th from 6-8 pm in the Cafe. If you are interested in attending, please let me know at your earliest convenience. For more details on volunteer opportunities, please check our website http://sistersoftheroad.org/volunteer/volunteer-opportunities/

We are starting some new partnerships and campaigns this summer specifically around Food Justice and the Homeless Bill of Rights so its a really exciting time to get involved. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future!

I have already replied.  I am required to be a volunteer to be able to hang out and invite veterans to look at our programs and services.
YOU can have a different reason ... getting community work on your resume being one of them.  Not all positions are in the cafe or require food service.
No pressure, just something to think about.

America's Job Exchange

Lee sent me another set of links.  I will give you the link to the site.  They have 11 local jobs available today.

America's Job Exchange

Vet Central

Some of you may remember when Lee Dupont spoke in WHVRP Job Club.  Today, he sent me a link to postings of positions where employers are targeting veterans.  They are not government employers so they are not required to give you "points" like governmental agencies are.

Today, there are 27 positions posted.  To access these postings, go here.

A woman veterans story

One of my community network members sent me this link today.  Apparently, KATU just picked up on it, the story is from April of this year.  I saw it as a hard copy/in a paper about that time.

Here is the link.  Still gets to me, even though I have read it before.

If any of you know veterans who are still struggling and might be eligible for our services, please put them in contact with the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.  HVRP.

Banking

Hiring tips from FINS / The Wall Street Journal:
Expanding its plans, Bank of America will double the number of military veteran hires to 1,000 this year. Opportunities are in IT, operations, military assistance, consumer banking and wealth management. Veterans shouldn't be shy: The bank already employs 6,000 vets and reservists. The bank likes veterans because they're not only good at following instructions, they're hard-working, disciplined and have a team mentality. Also wanted: financial advisers.

Goal Setting

We focused on setting achievable goals in Job Club yesterday.  I will be working with each WHVRP client during the next month to help with setting employment plans.

Without a plan, the job search can become overwhelming and ineffective.  (Voice of experience.)  Let's start the new fiscal year with postive plans and personally measured progress.

This OLMIS link has a lot of information which can help you discover your own strengths and how those strengths can be used to help you in your employment search.  Because there is so much information within OLMIS, plan to spend more than "a few minutes" exploring.

With the reorganization within the Employment Access Center, your access to self directed job search has increased.  If you need personal attention or a small group of you would like to work together in the computer lab: speak up!  We can make it happen for you.

Best Wishes and Happy Goal Setting!
